I often work with both athletes and non-athletes that complain of reoccurring neck problems ranging from soreness to long term painful kinks and lock-up. This can result in a reduction of range of motion, inability to preform certain tasks and a lot of discomfort.
A strong neck offers numerous benefits, including improved posture, reduced risk of neck injuries, better balance, better range of motion, enhanced athletic performance, and increased resistance to neck strain from everyday activities.
Let’s take a look at a few major muscles that play key roles in the neck.
The neck is a complex structure of muscles, tendons, and ligaments that allow for movement and stabilization of the head. There are numerous muscles in and around the neck that play crucial roles in supporting and protecting the head, facilitating swallowing and speech, and enabling various movements of the neck and shoulders.
One of the major muscles in the neck is the sternocleidomastoid, a long, thick muscle that runs from the base of the skull to the sternum and clavicle. It allows for rotation and flexion of the head and neck, and also assists in deep breathing.
Another important muscle is the trapezius, which is a large kite-shaped muscle that extends from the base of the skull to the middle of the back and across to the shoulders. It is responsible for movements of the shoulders and neck, such as shrugging and tilting the head.
The scalene muscles, including the anterior, middle, and posterior scalene, are located on the lateral aspect of the neck and assist in lifting the first and second ribs during deep inhalation.
My favorite piece of equipment and resource for neck strengthening exercises come from a company named The Iron Neck. They have designed a fantastic training device which my clients and I use regularly. They also provide many helpful articles and exercise options for developing a stronger neck and supporting muscles. I highly recommend that you take a look. Training the neck muscles a few times a week consistently over time can make a huge difference.
Both of my sons play football and I have them train The Iron Neck in order to enhance their performance and reduce the chances for concussion. This is especially useful for all contact sports. Thanks for reading.
